The moon is waning as it gets smaller again, after the full moon. As the moon seems to disappear in the sky, use this time to do spellwork to remove things from your life. The waning moon is a good time for the casting out of the old ways, banishing old habits, smoking, eating habits, the removal of troubles and worries.
Spells: Banishing bad habits, addictions, or ending relationships, breaking hexes, and darker things like banishing people.
I want to mention the Dark Moon here, also called “The Dark of the Moon” because I find it very interesting personally. Many witches do not bother themselves with the dark moon or are not aware of the meaning of it. Below is a description of the dark moon.
Dark of the Moon – The Dark of the Moon (or Dark Moon) is traditionally the last three days of the Lunar cycle, immediately preceding the New Moon, and the time when the night sky is notably absent the presence of the Moon. George notes that: “The earliest peoples understood that the power of life lay in the darkness of the moon.” “The purpose of the dark phase of any cycle is that of transition between the death of the old and the birth of the new. The dark time is a time of retreat, of healing, and of dreaming of the future.” i.e. the fallow times preceding outbursts of creativity and growth.
“Most of us do not realize we all have many dark phase times in our lives, and that these are naturally occurring periods in any life cycle. We fail to understand that endings are the precursors to new beginnings; thus when our life rhythms move us into and through these dark phases, we are ignorant of what is actually happening.” It is the grandeur of Death and Rebirth, not merely an ending with the proverbial ride off into the sunset.
“The dark phase of the cyclical process is a phase of healing and renewal rather than one of fear and unknowing; a time of mystery, wisdom, and healing power — all gifts of the Dark Moon Goddess.”
“There is less energy available for outer activities and meeting the expectations of others, because the purpose of the dark phase is for focusing on the inner dimensions of our bodies and minds. If we can learn to attune ourselves to the natural rhythms of ebb and flow in our lives, we can use the intrinsic function of the dark times for healing and renewal. When we resist this inward motion in our psyche, then anxiety, stress, and fear are more likely to take hold of our emotions.”
“The Triple Moon Goddess, in her new, full, and dark phases, was a model for the feminine nature in her entirety as maiden, mother, and crone. In her original worship the Dark Goddess, as the third aspect of this lunar trilogy, was honored, loved, and accepted for her wisdom and for her mystery teachings of renewal.”
Spells: Healing, renewal, psychic spells. A good time to meditate on the inner self.

Basic Working Spell Outline
We all have different ways and routines when doing spells and rituals. Below is a basic guideline suggested by many books and web sites that you may find helpful if you feel that following a structured routine will work best for you, or if you aren’t sure where to start and need a guideline. These are not set in stone and can be changed to suit your needs.
Choose a time. Decide the intent. Choose an aspect of the Divine, if you wish. Decide how to raise energy (ie: dance, chanting, drumming, etc.) Choose how to cast and close the circle.
Cleanse yourself and your magickal space.
You can do this with a ritual bath for yourself, or through meditation to still and focus your mind. You can cleanse your space with your magickal broom or with incense or burning herbs.
Cast the Circle
Starting at the North side of the room, point your finger or wand and say the following as you imagine white light energy streaming forth from your finger and forming a circle around you:
I cast this circle to create a sacred space.
No unwanted energies can enter this space.
The circle is now cast! So mote it be!
By the time you’ve walked three time around the circle, you should be finished saying that.
You may also choose to sprinkle salt or water on the ground around you or in the four corners.
Here’s another method for How to Cast a Circle
Invocation of the Divine
Invoke the Dieties by asking them to join you for your magical workings.
“God and Goddess, I ask that you join me here to assist with my magical workings.”
Statement of purpose
This is simply to tell the Divine why you have called Him/Her to the circle; what you are trying to accomplish.
Raise energy, through chanting or drumming or however you have chosen to do so. Direct or channel this energy by using candles, herbs, stones or whatever other correspondences you found to fit your specific need. Ground your energy when you have completed the working.
Cakes and Wine (optional)
Eat a small piece of bread or cookie and drink a little wine, milk or juice to help restore your energy.
Thanking the Divine
Closing the Circle
Starting from the West, walk widdershins (counterclockwise) around the circle three times as you say:
“The circle is open, but never broken.
So mote it be!
Merry meet and merry part,
and merry meet again!”
This is one way but be careful.
Purification Spell (To Break a Curse)
This is a “heavy-duty” purification spell.
On the night after the full moon and just before bed, light 13 candles, preferably white. Fill the tub up with hot water (as hot as you can stand to sit in). Add 1 cup sea salt, 1 tablespoon sage, 1 tablespoon lavender and 1 tablespoon chamomile. Turn off the water and let the bath steep in the herbs. Kneel or sit in front of the tub, in the nude, and repeat this incantation:
What was done was done
Be it now undone
By the light of the full moon’s wane
Cleanse my soul of taint and stain
Let now my hurtful spell reverse
And lift from me this vicious curse
As I enter now this sacred space
Return my spirit to it’s grace
Enter the bath and let the water cleanse away the effects of the curse. Use your hands to gather up the water and pour it 3 times of your head. Each time you do, repeat:
Accept my apologies for what was done
Disperse my spell with the morning’s sun
Remain in the bath until the water cools. Drain the tub and rinse off. Snuff the candles and go to sleep. By dawn the curse will be broken and you will once again find that feeling of “blessedness” that you lost.
